Okay, the madness has to stop. This past summer I was paying over $4 a gallon for gas. Oh sure, now gas is back to under $2 a gallon, but how long until we see the damn break open again and the next time we hit $5 a gallon? We need to stop living in a fantasy world. The US has an energy crisis and it is quite real. We need to stop counting on the Middle East to supply us with oil or we’re going to be up the proverbial creek without the proverbial paddle. Great, so what are our alternatives?
Well, for starters, we can have the solar power house. Solar power is essentially getting energy from our sun, which is certainly going to last a lot longer than the world’s oil reserves. Energy from the sun can be used to generate electricity, heat your water, light buildings and so on. The way it is done is through the use of photovoltaic panels. Don’t ask me how they work. I am NO scientist.
Then we have wind power. Wind power is generated by using a turbine. These are usually mounted on towers. They collect wind energy which can then be converted into electricity. This is actually a great source of energy because we are always going to have wind…sometimes more than we would actually like. If you don’t believe me, ask the survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
Another great source of renewable energy is water power. The great thing about water power besides the fact that it is renewable is that is produces no waste at all and no carbon dioxide. Waterpower, or hydroelectric power works like this. Water is held behind a dam forming an artificial lake. When the water is released, the pressure, which is quite great, spins the blades of a giant turbine. The turbine is connected to a generator which makes electricity as it spins. It’s that simple.
My friend, we need these renewable sources of energy NOW. There are a number of online resources for harnessing the power of alternative sources of energy. Read my Review of DIY Power System for details.
